DC Sail News

Thursday night racing started off with a loud horn blast on June 12th as our Flying Scots hit the water for their first race of the season.  We had a great breeze and a cool night as our skippers rounded the marks.  Experienced sailors were able to practice starts and tactics while newly certified members helped out as crew.  One FJ sailor even managed to sneak in, and if we have any others who are interested we would be able to run two staggered starts.

Everyone came together afterwards for drinks and dinner at Cantina Marina. Sarah Meharg, Blair Overman, and Chad Kay served as the race committee.

Learn to Sail with DC Sail's Sailing Lessons.  You will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to pass our certification test, which will allow you to rent boats without an instructor.  Lessons include four lessons and membership. Click here to sign up before the summer begins

Introducing Our New Staff

Blair Overman - Blair Overman recently joined NMHF as the new Director of the Youth Sailing Programs.  She is really excited to be here and looks forward to the continuous development of Kids Set Sail and our High School Racing Team.  Overman grew up in New Bern, North Carolina sailing on the Neuse River and further increased her knowledge working for Camp Seafarer’s Sailing Program in Arapahoe, NC for six years.  She has a strong knowledge base in boats ranging from small dinghies to 30-foot cruising vessels, and teaching children all the skills that they need to master these boats.

Sailing has always been a huge part of Blair's life and is thrilled to be a part of an organization with a mission to spread the benefits of this sport to the surrounding community.  One of the ways NMHF is seeking to accomplish this goal is through our Kids Set Sail summer camp.  Currently Overman is drafting a new curriculum, training the Kids Set Sail instructors, and organizing all of the small features that will make this week-long camp a memorable experience for our kids.

Sarah Meharg - Sarah Meharg recently joined NMHF as the new Director of DC Sail.  Sarah joins us from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.  She learned how to sail at the Plymouth Yacht Club on Turnabouts, a now defunct one design, and raced 420s and Lasers throughout high school.  Sarah looks forward to helping expand Thursday night racing and enjoying margaritas at Cantina Marina as she polishes up her own committee boat skills.

Alana Rediker- Alana Rediker recently joined NMHF as a full time intern. Alana grew up in Hampden, Massachusetts, spending summers on Cape Cod where she would occassionally take a sail boat ride. She is currently seeking her bachelors in Business Administration at George Washington University. In addition, Rediker is excited to learn how to sail and looks forward to many sailing adventures with NMHF.

Boating Safety

NMHF requires that all of our members comply with District of Columbia law and as a learning organization provides every opportunity for continued growth. Per DC law, anyone operating a boat within our waterways is required to have a Boater’s Safety Certificate.  These can be earned online through a learning module followed by a quiz.  These cost $15 and the card will be mailed to you. Here is one good option: http://www.boatingbasicsonline.com/

The DC police also offer their own schedule of classes, free of charge, and will provide you with a card immediately upon completion.  Their schedule is available online here: http://mpdc.dc.gov/mpdc/cwp/view,a,1237,q,559121,mpdcNav_GID,1550,mpdcNav,|31855|.asp

At least one person in every boat should be able to produce a Boater’s Safety Card upon request by the DC Police. There is a $50 fine for non-compliance which must be paid at the police station.  This is not like a parking ticket in that it is taken much more seriously.

We encourage everyone to take their safety and that of others seriously while on the water.  Earning a Boater’s Safety Card is a great way to do this!
