News
American Spirit is (finally) Comin' Home!
The welders from Moss Marine just finished their work on the Spirit and the US Coast Guard has certified her! A few final touches and she will be on her way to a Pirate Raid on unsuspecting kids at Point Lookout. Our pirate sailors hope to bring her back to DC late next week when we will resume our ever-popular Friday evening Members and Friends Cruises! Join us on Friday, August 10 for her Welcome Home to DC voyage!! Contact the NMHF office to reserve your spot.

NMHF Hosts the Colombian State Tall Ship, ARC Gloria
On Sunday, July 22 the Tall Ship ARC Gloria became the first Tall Ship to pass through the new Wilson Bridge and came to port on the Southwest Waterfront in the Washington Channel. The ship made it past the shallow Haines Point with six inches to spare at high tide, and will spend a week in port. NMHF invited a number of civic and business leaders to join us aboard the vessel as she came through the Wilson Bridge while the Colombian crew manned the rigging as she sailed in the District on Sunday morning to a large, welcoming crowd of spectators.
In other Tall Ship news, the Freedom Schooner Amistad plans to make port in DC in 2008 on her return to New Haven after her historic 14,000 mile trans-Atlantic retracing of the old slave routes. NMHF is excited to host this very special Ship once again in our Nation’s Capital.
A Special Thanks to Our Generous Supporters

Become an NMHF Member Today!
Our goal for 2007 is to have 1000 members by the end of the year. So far, we are 420 members strong. We would like you to join us in the 2007 NMHF membership drive! The foundation is at a very exciting point in its development and your support will allow us to continue our growth and follow through on our mission of inspiring minds through maritime educational experiences.
NMHF has had a great year in 2006, putting over 4000 children and adults on the water – more than ever before! Over the past two years, NMHF has:
* Founded the Schooner American Spirit Education Program
* Established the National Capital High School Sailing Program
* Established partnerships with 23 well-known civic and educational organizations in Washington, DC including the Boys & Girls Club, YMCA and Boy Scouts.
* NMHF was named Cultural Partner for Re-development of Southwest Waterfront, Washington, D.C in October 2006
We hope to be able to continue to build on our accomplishments and evolve our programs. Please click the hyperlink to join http://www.nmhf.org/membership.asp or call 202-547-1250 to join NMHF. Membership lasts for one year from the day that you join. Please take the time to review our information, lend your support and join us!
Sponsor a Kids Set Sail Sailor!
When kids arrive at our Kids Set Sail Program, over half or them have never been on a boat or on the rivers of Washington, DC. Kids Set Sail provides these youth with access to the sport many of us love. Our youth acquire the leadership, teamwork, communication and profound respect for the environment that come with sailing.
With your help, we were able to provide sailing scholarships to over 50 young sailors in our Kids Set Sail and High School Sailing programs last year. These new sailors liked the program and some have found their way into high schools with sailing teams. NMHF has always partnered with DC’s non-profits (DC Park and Rec, Eastern Branch Boys and Girls Club, YMCA and others) to serve area youth. This year, we are excited to include partnerships with the FBR Boys and Girls Club and National Capital YMCA. Your sponsorships have made these partnerships possible.
Please consider sponsoring another sailor this year. With $500 we can give a scholarship to one sailor. This pays for boat maintenance costs, safety equipment and program materials. Sponsorship levels include:
- Sponsor-a-sailor - $500.00
- Support-a-sailor - $250.00
- Maintain-a-sailor - $100.00
You can make a donation by going to www.nmhf.org and clicking on “Donate Now," or, call the NMHF office at 202.547.1250 for more information. You will support a great cause and help a young person experience the joy of sailing this summer!

Volunteer for the BIG Team Regatta!
Want to help out for a great event? The Regatta Committee is making BIG plans for our next race in September. If you like to have fun and sail this is a great group for you. The BIG is going into its fifth year and has raised over $100,000 for NMHF on the water programming. This year’s event is going to be bigger and better than ever! Our co-chairs for this terrific event are Adam Levithan, from True-Wind Coaching, LLC, and Kyra Szanto, from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and we have five returning committee members from last year. Would you like to get involved? Please contact Kevin Traver at KTraver@NMHF.org for more information.

Kids Set Sail Mid-Summer Update
I am sitting on the bow of Zephyr, enjoying another perfect summer day on the water. The wind is strong but not overpowering and I have three 15 year old girls sailing the boat. None have ever been on a sailboat before and yet I am completely confident in their respective abilities. As a sudden gust hits our sails and we begin to heel, I look at Jasmine who has already instinctively let out the main sheet. These girls will be sailing without an instructor in Friday’s regatta.
These last four weeks of Kids Set Sail have been utterly amazing. We have taught kids from all over the city how to excel in this exciting sport. With the combined efforts of a team of dedicated instructors, generous fiscal supporters and energetic kids, I am elated to report that this is the most successful summer of Kids Set Sail to date. Four out of six sessions are completely booked and each week gets better and better.
There are plans to hold an end-of-summer regatta where kids from each week can race against each other and share their memories of sailing camp. The only downside is that the summer is drawing to a close and I know I’ll have to wait another year for this experience. Thank you to everyone who helped to make KSS ’07 possible and even more thanks to everyone who has believed in this camp for so long! Keep your eyes open for early registration possibilities for KSS ’08.
Thanks!
