Kevin Traver & Kathryn Williams wed, June 3, 2006
The winds
blew raucous with jovial familiarity ushering out the rain clouds from the
night before. As the sun appeared from the haze, our Executive Director,
Kevin Traver of Mystic, CT was wed to Kathryn Williams of Potomac, MD at Trinity Church in Georgetown. It was a beautiful service with over 100 guests
and family followed by a reception at the Universitys Club, just around the corner
from the US Chamber of Commerce, where the blessed couple first met.
Please join us in extending our sincere best wishes for fair winds and following seas in what promises to be a long and prosperous voyage!
Last Fall, during the BIG Regatta for Kids Set Sail, NMHF held a raffle for one of the prettiest boats afloat; a New England Catboat. The 20-foot HandyCat, “Brief Prescription,” was donated by Rich O’Brien to support his pet project, “Kids Set Sail.” Deborah Keir bought a $100 raffle ticket and despite the odds (1 in 57), she held the winning number!
Unfortunately, the seas are never calm, true love never runs smoothly, and things happen. Just before she was to take delivery of “Brief Prescription,” the boat was severely damaged in a storm that blew through in late October. The damage included total loss of running rigging, a boom and mast that were broken in half, and damage to the rub-rails surrounding the deck.
After re-creating the rigging layout and extensive repairs, “Brief Prescription” was delivered to Deborah Keir on June 3, 2006. Here’s wishing her and her family happy memories!

DC Sail Open House a
Resounding Success!!
Thanks to all who
attended the DC Sail Bar-B-Que and Open House on Saturday, June 10. DC Sail
members, Kristine Dunne and Jennifer Peterson grilled burgers and hotdogs for
over sixty people, and, volunteers took guests out for a sail in the blustery
weather. It proved to be an exciting way to get new people excited for the 2006
season of DC Sail. Another open house is planned for late July, and, we hope to
see all of you out there for the event! Click here for more details about the
upcoming event.

Woman Propositioned Aboard American Spirit
It was a warm day as schooner American Spirit retrieved her dock lines and settled into her slip. Amid the typical chaos that entails the unloading of a charter party, I noticed a lone man handing back waiting for the boat to empty. Enter, David Brink. Once the decks cleared, he approached me and made his request.
David Brink, it seems had been bitten by the “bug,” smitten, if you will, by Cupid’s dart. While looking for a suitable platform to propose to his beloved, “American Spirit,” to his eyes, fit the bill. After arrangements were made, crew arranged and the aforementioned beloved told to “go shopping” with her friends, David arrived with a bottle of champagne a dozen red roses and sweaty palms. He then left to intercept his destiny and deliver the object of his affection to the boat.
The gods smiled as Dave and Amy stepped aboard and, with a crew of three, set sail into the sunset and the great unknown. Apparently all went well. The champagne cork popped and the would-be groom dropped to his knees. She was surprised, to say the least, and he, luckily, got the response he was hoping for. True love runs deep as a river. May your days be bright.

NMHF Funding Update
NMHF is pleased to announce that the Rotary Foundation has granted us monies to support the National Capital High School Sailing Team. With this assistance, NMHF looks forward to another great season with local high school sailors. NMHF has also been awarded a grant from the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation to fund American Spirit educational trips in conjunction with DC Parks and Recreation. Through this program, approximately 700 children will enjoy the waters of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers this summer.
With interest in NMHF programs like DC Sail, Spirit-in-School, and American Spirit trips on the rise, we are working hard to obtain further funding to expand and improve them. Currently, we are awaiting news regarding grant requests with the following organizations: Raytheon Corporation, the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, Escheated Estates Funds (DC), McGowan Fund, Starbucks Foundation, Meyer Foundation, and Radio Shack Foundation.
Additionally, we are beginning a major fundraising drive to put Kids Set Sail back on the water. You will soon receive a letter by mail outlining the problem and how you can help. Essentially, we are asking that you Sponsor-a-Sailor by donating $500, Support-a-Sailor by donating $250, or Maintain-a-Sailor by donating $100. To help keep the programs like Kids Set Sail going strong simply visit our website (www.nmhf.org) and click on the 'Donate Now' link.
NMHF's Washington Maritime Center Included in Multiple Plans for the Redevelopment of the Southwest Waterfront
On April 1st, the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC) announced a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for the Southwest Waterfront. The RFEI was the first step in selecting a master developer to revitalize and reinvent the Southwest Waterfrtont over the next 5 - 7 years. Overall, seventeen plans were submitted to AWC in answer to this project. One section of the plan called for the candidates to name a "cultural partner" to construct an educational center of 150,000 square feet to be an anchor attraction on the waterfront, increasing visitation to the waterfront and to be a world-class educational center. The National Maritime Heritage Foundation, in partnership with the United States Navy Museum and Living Classrooms was selected by seven of the master developer candidates as their cultural partner.
Our plan calls for NMHF to build the Washington Maritime Center. This plan could incorporate some portion of the United States Navy Museum, currently housed on the Washington Navy Yard, and a strong program presence by our friends at the Living Classrooms; this is envisioned as an equal partnership between these great originations and a true public/private partnership. The plan also calls for the construction of the national capital tall ship, Spirit of Enterprise, by NMHF, and the expansion of our sailing and maritime educational programming currently taking place on the Southwest Waterfront.
On Tuesday, June 13 AWC named the five finalists for the competition: PN Hoffman, East Banc/LNR, JBG, Madison/KSI and The John Buck Companies. NMHF is proud to say that we are partnered with PN Hoffman and Madison/KSI at this time and look forward to working with and supporting them through this next phase.
The Washington Maritime Center represents an amazing opportunity for NMHF to expand its programming and, at the same time, be a major contributor to the revitalization of the Southwest Waterfront. A 2005 Howard University Center for Urban Progress study that NMHF commissioned shows that the Washington Maritime Center’s economic impact in terms of output/income to the District economy is estimated to be $176.43 million, growing to $216.66 million by the year 2017. New employment will be created in the initial year of the center operation by 5,359. An annual 7% growth in employment will add additional jobs of 2155 by the year 2017. This would result in real and substantial economic benefits for our community.
NMHF believes that communities that maintain and enhance their unique sense of place offer better quality of life for residents and visitors. Environments with a strong sense of place are distinctive. They've got personality. They connect residents and visitors with what is unique about their setting and history. By filling the void in Washington for a world class maritime education center, the facility will capable of providing educational resources, exhibit and collection space, and have an interactive component. Built into the Washington Maritime Center will be a fully active tall ship replica. Visitors can climb the rigging, experience the sleeping quarters of a 19th Century mariner, fire a demo cannon, and get insight into life as a 19th Century sailor. Children will be able to experience unique and exciting activities while their parents connect to previous generations through regional maritime exhibits, art galleries and state of the art educational programming.
We hope you will continue to support NMHF has it moves into this new phase of its growth. If you have any questions about the Washington Maritime Center please email at KTraver@NMHF.org
