The 1st Annual NMHF Golf Classic a Huge Success!

On June 7, 2007 the 1st Annual NMHF Golf Classic was held at Potomac Ridge Golf Club in Waldorf, Maryland.  Over 100 golfers hit the links in support of the foundation, playing on the great Potomac Ridge Course.  The Golf Classic made $35,000.00 in its inaugural year and we are hopeful of much growth in 2008.

NMHF would like to thank all our corporate sponsors for this event including: The Brick Companies, PN Hoffman, PNC Bank, Maesuk, Eccountable, Bec Tech, The National Marine Manufactures Association, The Staubach Company and Washington First Bank.

NMHF would like to thank the Co-Chairs of this event NMHF Board Member Rich O’Brien and Charlie Birney from The Brick Companies.  As the founding Co-Chairs of a new event they gave more time, effort and direction than a normal Chair would give for this type of event.  Thank you both for your efforts.

We would also like to thank Teri Kuhn from Powell Goldstein for her volunteer efforts on behalf of the event.  Stephanie Berger and her staff at Berger Strategies and Hirschberg Strategies were wonderful in support this event in everyway and managed the entire event on behalf of NMHF.  April Sheapp and her staff at Atlantic Golf made the whole event easy, fun and complete.  Thank you all.

NMHF Board Member Linda Lindquist-Bishop Speaks at The BIG
Sail'Ebrity Happy Hour

Linda Lindquist-Bishop, a member of A3, the first all women’s America’s Cup team, recently spoke at the BIG Team Regatta’s Sail’Ebrity Happy Hour, which was held at Phillip’s Seafood in DC. Linda is also a new member of NMHF’s board of directors. NMHF members and supporters of the BIG Team Regatta listened to her tell stories about her experiences sailing fast and building high-performance teams. She also discussed the positive impacts and experiences sailing gives youth, especially those with few opportunities. As president of the Kairos Network, Ltd., Linda uses her 19+ years of sailing experience, combined with 20+ years business experience to help organizations reach goals, fulfill missions and excel.

Bob Schofield of Akridge... Beijing Bound?

Bob Schofield is a great sailor. It’s that simple.  In March 2007, Bob was named to the 2007 US Sailing Team and is one of the finalists to go to the 2008 Olympics in the Star Class, along with his teammate John MacCausland of Medford, N.J.  Together Bob and John are one of the three teams that U.S. Sailing has endorsed as Olympic hopefuls.   Bob sees himself as the underdog to go to the Olympics because, unlike the other two teams, Bob is keeping up his full-time job with Akridge where he is a Vice President for Development.

As an NMHF member, Bob has been an incredible supporter of NMHF’s youth sailing programs in the District.  In 2006, Bob led the Akridge Sailing Team into the BIG Team Regatta for the first time where they placed second.  There are rumors that Bob will be back with the Akridge crew for the 2007 BIG Team Regatta and Regatta organizers are thinking about some type of “Olympic penalty” to even the playing field. Sorry Bob!

Congratulations Bob and keep up the great work!

Phil Weeks Works
Aboard American Spirit

This has been a difficult year for our boat.  She finally splashed in Annapolis on June 18.   A small leak appeared the next day, and, the boat will remain at Port Annapolis until it is fixed.

We know everyone is looking forward to sailing her again.  We will let you know when she returns and look forward to having you sail with us sometime this summer.

We also want to thank the many volunteers who have helped her get in shape!  Special thanks go to Phil Weeks who spent many backbreaking and hot days helping out.

Schooner Amistad Retraces Slave Route

The Freedom Schooner Amistad is departing Connecticut on June 21, 2007 for a 14,000mile transatlantic voyage retracing the route of the slave trade.  The trip commemorates the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade within the British Empire.  The Freedom Schooner Amistad will set sail from the US east coast and stop in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.  In 1839, 53 slaves mutinied on board the Amistad. They were captured, but won freedom in a historic legal battle.  The story was depicted in the film Amistad directed by Steven Spielberg in 1997.

For more information on this history trip please see (ADD BBC LINK.)  or go to http://www.amistadamerica.org/

On her return voyage in 2008, Amistad is schedule to visit Washington, D.C.  NMHF will be hosting this visit of this history vessel.  Please stand by for more information.

Sponsor a Kids Set Sail Sailor!

When kids arrive at our Kids Set Sail Program, over half or them have never been on a boat or on the rivers of Washington, DC. Kids Set Sail provides these youth with access to the sport many of us love. Our youth acquire the leadership, teamwork, communication and profound respect for the environment that come with sailing.

With your help, we were able to provide sailing scholarships to over 50 young sailors in our Kids Set Sail and High School Sailing programs last year. These new sailors liked the program and some have found their way into high schools with sailing teams. NMHF has always partnered with DC’s non-profits (DC Park and Rec, Eastern Branch Boys and Girls Club, YMCA and others) to serve area youth. This year, we are excited to include partnerships with the FBR Boys and Girls Club and National Capital YMCA. Your sponsorships have made these partnerships possible.

Please consider sponsoring another sailor this year. With $500 we can give a scholarship to one sailor. This pays for boat maintenance costs, safety equipment and program materials. Sponsorship levels include:

  • Sponsor-a-sailor - $500.00
  • Support-a-sailor - $250.00
  • Maintain-a-sailor - $100.00

You can make a donation by going to www.nmhf.org and clicking on “Donate Now," or, call the NMHF office at 202.547.1250 for more information. You will support a great cause and help a young person experience the joy of sailing this summer!

NCHSS Parents & Participants Raise Money to Buy New FJ Sails

This season Oliver Whitney, program director of NCHSS, and Thomas Deal, racing coach, noted the degrading condition of their fleet's FJ sails. Patricia Andril, parent of the high school racers John & Katie, heard that one of her friends was selling six pairs of barely used FJ main sails & jib sails for only $1,000! That’s over 75% off the price of what new FJ sails typically cost! Patricia, Oliver and Thomas organized a fundraiser among the parents and students to raise money to purchase the sails. Racing participant, Katie Andril raised $73 at a bake sale she held at her school, Bishop O’Connell while the parents donated a total of $900 for the sails! NMHF would like to thank the following parents for their generous donations:sds

Kids Set Sail

Kids Set Sail already has three weeks booked and is going to be at a great summer of fun!  We are working with kids from Paradise at Parkside Community Center, Howard University Middle School of Math and Science, as well as schools from all over the city.  Each session, kids will be learning how to sail our Flying Scots while enjoying exciting activities such as ‘Pirate Day’, flag making, sailing jeopardy and much more.  This summer would not be possible without the support of our members and volunteers. The Kids Set Sail staff is incredibly grateful for all of your help.  If you are interested in signing up for KSS, we still have a few spots open in Sessions 6 and 7.  Please visit http://www.nmhf.org/kids_set_sail.asp or contact Liz Gossens (Lgossens@nmhf.org) for more information.

The Great Wilmington Tugboat Festival
When: July 7 & 8, 2007 123
Where: Kalmar Nyckel Foundation Crab/Beer Tent, Wilmington Delaware

Our good friends at the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation in Wilmington, Delaware  have ask us to let all our members know about The Great Wilimington Tugboat Festival coming up on July 7 & 8, 2007.  Peg Tigue, the founding Executive Director of the National Maritime Heritage Foundation, is now the Director of Development of the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation.

The present day Kalmar Nyckel serves as Delaware’s seagoing goodwill ambassador. She was built by a group of committed citizens to be a continuing witness to the courage and spirit of those individuals who undertook the mid-winter North Atlantic crossing in 1637-1638.

Since 1998, the ship has served as an outreach platform for the State of Delaware and a catalyst for social and economic development. The ship provides a unique platform for the Foundation’s educational programming as well as a venue for diplomatic, recreational, governmental and commemorative functions. The ship is owned and operated by the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, a non-profit organization that offers people of all ages a variety of sea and land based learning and recreational experiences.

For more information on this great maritime event please go to http://www.kalmarnyckel.org/default.asp or call 302 429 7447.
