Volunteer!! The NMHF Golf Classic Needs Your Help!

On Thursday, June 7, 2007 NMHF will enter new waters when it hosts the 1st Annual National Maritime Heritage Foundation Golf Classic at Potomac Ridge in Waldorf, Maryland.  The proceeds from the great event will go to support NMHF and its mission of inspiring minds through maritime educational experiences.  The event is almost sold out, with 36 foursomes and some great corporate sponsors.  An event like this needs lots of hands to put on!  We are looking for some great volunteers for the day of this event.  This is a great way to support NMHF!

Thank you!

NMHF Announces New Partnership!

The National Maritime Heritage Foundation is proud to announce a new educational and preservation partnership with the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society!

The Society focuses on implementing the U.S. Lighthouse Society's goals in the Chesapeake Bay area, particularly with regard to the lighthouses and lightships of Virginia and Maryland. Specifically, to assist, in every possible way, the restoration and preservation of America's lighthouses; to continue researching the history of lighthouses, lightships and related aids to navigation; to collect artifacts and lore; to sustain a program of putting concerned parties in touch with local restoration groups; to serve as the meansof communication between all who care about the preservation of these unique symbols of our nations maritime heritage; to maintain and constantly upgrade a comprehensive research library and photographic archives; to continue publication of The Keeper's Log, a unique quarterly journal dedicated solely to interesting historical aspects of these sentinels.  For more information on the Societies activates please go to www.cheslights.org  NMHF is excited about this new partnership and in the near future our members will see more and more opportunities to get involved with the Chesapeake Bay Lighthouse Society through this partnership.

5th Anniversary Celebration of the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge

On September 15 and 16, 2007 the Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society and the lighthouse organizations of Maryland will be holding the 5th Anniversary Celebration of the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge!  The Challenge is a weekend long adventure up and down the Chesapeake Bay to see all the land-based lighthouses.  For each lighthouse visited you will collect a special commemorative lighthouse magnet depicting that lighthouse from the water.

NMHF would like to organize a group of its members and friends to take part in this great event.  If we have enough interest we would rent a bus and organize the over night stay so we can complete the Challenge.  If you are interested in joining in this great event please contact Liz Gossens at LGossens@nmhf.org or call 202 547 1250.

Where is American Spirit?

Many of our members and friends have been reaching out to the office and asking: Where is American Spirit?  Why have you not started the Friday Night Members and Friends Cruises?  When can I start volunteering as crew on American Spirit?

American Spirit is at Port Annapolis Marina in Annapolis, Maryland undergoing a refit, spring facelift and our annual Coast Guard hull inspection.  As a lot of us know, boats are two things: 1) Expensive and 2) A lot of work. When the Coast Guard says, “You have to do this,” you do it.  We had been hopeful that American Spirit would be back in late April or early May, but the weather, cold and storms in the early Spring really delayed the process.  A short list of the work that has been done to American Spirit this Spring includes; repairing two small rusted areas in Her hull; stepping the masts and replacing all the standing rigging; sandblasting and painting her hull; grinding rust spots and repainting her top sides; rebuilding her aft cabin and forward cabin; and rebuilding one of her heads.  Overall, it is a long list of mandatory repairs.

We are now hopeful that American Spirit will return to Washington in early June to start its educational mission, charters and the Friday Night Cruises for the Summer.  We will keep everyone updated on our progress.

Sponsor a Kids Set Sail Sailor!

When kids arrive at our Kids Set Sail Program, over half or them have never been on a boat or on the rivers of Washington, DC. Kids Set Sail provides these youth with access to the sport many of us love. Our youth acquire the leadership, teamwork, communication and profound respect for the environment that come with sailing.

With your help, we were able to provide sailing scholarships to over 50 young sailors in our Kids Set Sail and High School Sailing programs last year. These new sailors liked the program and some have found their way into high schools with sailing teams. NMHF has always partnered with DC’s non-profits (DC Park and Rec, Eastern Branch Boys and Girls Club, YMCA and others) to serve area youth. This year, we are excited to include partnerships with the FBR Boys and Girls Club and National Capital YMCA. Your sponsorships have made these partnerships possible.

Please consider sponsoring another sailor this year. With $500 we can give a scholarship to one sailor. This pays for boat maintenance costs, safety equipment and program materials. Sponsorship levels include:

  • Sponsor-a-sailor - $500.00
  • Support-a-sailor - $250.00
  • Maintain-a-sailor - $100.00

You can make a donation by going to www.nmhf.org and clicking on “Donate Now," or, call the NMHF office at 202.547.1250 for more information. You will support a great cause and help a young person experience the joy of sailing this summer!

Program Updates

An Update from the National Capital High School Sailing Program
By Thomas Deal, Head Coach

The High School Sailing Program has enjoyed great success this year.  Having worked for Kids Set Sail during the summer of 2005, I was happy to come on board as the racing coach for this season.  Oliver Whitney has done a great job as Program Director.  We enjoy a full roster, including teams from Sidwell Friends, T.C. Williams, and Bishop O’Connell.  Having attended two away regattas in Annapolis and at Solomons Island, NMHF will have hosted two as well – on May 5 and May 20 – featuring breakfast, all-day barbeque, and an awards ceremony.  The entire NMHF family is encouraged to attend.  The student sailors are to be congratulated for balancing their academics and extra-curricular activities with the demands of the sailing team.  They should also be lauded for demonstrating remarkable growth as sailors and racers.  Most recently, our team enjoyed a 2nd place finish in one of the regattas.  We look forward to next season and hope to expand the program even further.
