Waterfront Happenings

Join Us for the Parade of Lights at the Gangplank Marina!

DC Sail Members, Friends & Volunteers,

With the Holiday season quickly approaching, NMHF is getting into the spirit.  Saturday evening, December 1st, the Washington Waterfront Association is hosting their annual lighting of the Southwest Christmas Tree, and Parade of Lights to take place in the Washington Channel.  This is a big event, and we have not only agreed to participate, but also have been asked to LEAD THE PROCESSION!  So, we’re pulling out all the stops this year, and we need your help!  Volunteers will not only be able to join us on the water, but also earn hours towards a DC Sail Super Membership for the month of April.  We also are in need of a generator, so if you have any connections, please let us know!
Basically, there are two parts to this exercise:

  • Decorating American Spirit
    • 12p-3p at the boat, 600 Water St.  We provide the snacks and beverages; you help get the rig up and going.
  • Crewing AS during the parade
    • 4p Board AS
    • 4:30p Depart Gangplank Marina
    • 5-7p Parade in the Potomac River & Washington Channel
    • 7-?  Light pillaging and rampant merrymaking. At Cantina Marina

So, there is the schedule.  If you have some time and would like to get into the holiday spirit, please contact Rob Bader at rbader@nmhf.org or call 202-547-1250 and we'll save you a spot!  We’d love to see you again.

 All the best,

 The NMHF Crew

PS: Sleigh bells ring…hey, are you listnin’?

Season Wrap-Up: The National Capital High School Sailing Program

abcThe National Capital High School Sailing concluded the end of its second year of programming at the end of October. Over the past year, we had forty-two students participate. We introduced eight students to the sport and thirty-four students participated in the racing program. Students came from schools that participated in years past including The SEED School of Washington and Bishop O’Connell along with several new schools including Whitman High School and KIMA Public Charter School as well. Kristen Berry joined NMHF team as racing coach for the high school program. NMHF commends all of his efforts in helping the program. In all, it was a very successful season!

DC Sail’s VIP Instructors of 2007

After thirty weeks of on-the-water programming, DC Sail shut down its facility for the winter on the twenty-seventh of October. The staff at NMHF is grateful for all of the hard work that DC Sail’s group of volunteer instructors invested into the Learn-to-Sail program this year. From early April until the end of October, fifty-one volunteers contributed over 903 hours of their time!! That is up from 573 hours last year! Several of our volunteers have gone above and beyond with their help:

1) Prag Katta 81 Hours
2) Mickey Panayiotakis

60 Hours

3) Andrew Ross 57 Hours
4) Tony Domenico 51 Hours
5) Tom Sliter 44 Hours

Thanks for all of your hard work!
