NMHF Spotlight: Jochen Hoffman

Jochen Hoffman has been a familiar and welcome face on American Spirit.  This is his second year captaining the schooner.  Besides sailing the American Spirit, Jochen is a sailing instructor at the Maryland School of Sailing and Seamanship and has over 25,000 sea miles under his belt.  His sailing background and experience on American Spirit has been very helpful in getting our new captains familiar with the boat.  Jochen has been a great supporter of NMHF and the American Spirit.

NMHF Forms Relationship With the SEED School of Washington DC

Oliver Whitney, Director of the National Capital High School Sailing Program, met with several staff members at the SEED School of Washington DC to discuss NMHF's involvement there over the next few years. NMHF is excited to have formed this new long-term relationship. The public charter school's after-school program schedule now includes the high school sailing program in their agenda. Five students signed up this season to learn to sail and we hope to introduce more students to the sport of sailing in the Spring!

The SEED School offers an intensive academic and boarding education to 320 urban children in grades seven through twelve. Overwhelmingly, SEED families want their children to have more and better opportunities than they did. Some students are pushed onward by strong families who are seeking out the best education for their children. Others find a refuge at SEED, a safe place for them to learn and live while their families overcome personal challenges. At SEED, all students find a network of family and community support that helps them to thrive academically and socially. NMHF looks forward to a growing, strengthening relationship with the SEED School!
